The engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT)he taken it a step further changing the actual comition of plants in order to get them to perform diverse,n unusual functions. These include plants that he sensors printed onto their lees to show when they’re short of water and a plant that can detect harmful chemicals in groundwater. "We’re thinking about how we can engineer plants to replace functions of the things that we use ry day,"explained Michael Strano, a professor of chemical engineering at MIT.
One of his latest projects has been to make plants grow in experiments using some common vegetables. Strano’s team found that they could create a faint light for three-and-a-half hours. The light, about one-thousandth of the amount needed to read by, is just a start. The technology, Strano said, could one day be used to light the rooms or n to turn tree into self-powered street lamps.
Lighting accounts for about 7% of the total electricity consumed in the US. Since lighting is often far removed from the power source — such as the distance from a power plant to street lamps on a remote highway — a lot of energy is lost during tranission.

Sunny countries are often poor. A shame, then, that solar power is still quite expensive. Eight19, a British company by Cambridge University, has, howr, invented a novel way to get round this. In return for a deit of around $10 it is supplying poor Kenyan families with a solar cell able to generate 2.5 watts of electricity, a battery that can deliver a three amp(安培) current to store this electricity, and a lamp whose bulb is a light-emitting diode(二极管). The firm thinks that this , once the battery is fully charged, is enough to light two all rooms and to power a mobile-phone charger for sn hours. Then, next day, it can be put outside and charged back up again.
The trick is that, to be able to use the electricity, the 's keeper must buy a scratch card—for as little as a dollar—on which is printed a reference number. The keeper sends this reference, plus the serial number of the household solar unit, by SMS to Eight19. The company's server will respond automatically with an access code to the unit.
Users may consider that they are paying an hoy rate for their electricity. In fact, they are paying off the cost of the unit. After buying around $80 worth of scratch cards—which Eight19 expects would take the erage family around 18 m onths—the user will own it. In that case, he would go then through the same process again, paying off the additional cost of the upgraded kit at a slightly higher rate. Users would therefore increase their electricity supply steadily and affordably.

How words came into being is unknown. All we assume is that some early men invented certain sounds, in one way or another, to express thoughts and feelings, actions and things, so that they could talk with each other. Later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be put toger to show those sounds, and which could be written down. Those sounds, wher spoken or written in letters, are called words.
Great writers are those who not only he great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which he powerful effects on our minds and feelings. This clr use of words is what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a of words. He can express his meaning in words which sing like music and which by their ition and association can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them correctly, or they will make our speech silly and common.
Teens and younger children are reading a lot less for fun, according to a Common Sense Media report published Monday.
b.表示转折关系:but;yet;howr;by contrast等
c.表示因果关系:therefor;thereby;consequently;as a result等
d.表示递进关系:in addition to;n;what'more;furthermore等
e.表示重要性的词: prime;above all;first等
If youwant to find soming to do for Saturday afternoon ,which ephone number will you call ?
Most sea is red and brown in color.
Invariably the background was the same.
You’ll be punished if you desert rubbish rywhere.
Insects would make it imsible for us to live in the world; they would devour all our crops and kill our flocks and herds.
Wood and skins he easily rotted away, but stone doesn’t decay.
Modern alpinists try to climb mountains by a route which will give them good sport.
It is animals and plants that lived in or near water whose remains are most likely to be preserved, for one of the necessary conditions of preservation is quick burial, and it is only in the seas and rivers, and sometimes lakes, where mud and silt(淤泥) he been continuously deited(沉积), that bodies and the like can be rapidly covered over and preserved.
It is animals and plants that lived in or near water,它的后面带了一个原因状语从句:for one of the necessary conditions of preservation is quick burial,而句子中whose所的句子是一个定语从句,隔位修饰前面的animals and plants 而不是 water;第 2 个并列句子的主句为:it is only in the seas and rivers, and sometimes lakes that bodies and the like can be rapidly covered over and preserved,而 where 所的句子为定语从句,对前面的the seas and rivers, and sometimes lakes 进行修饰。
These days, it is differences in national regulations, far more than tariffs that put sand in the wheels of trade between rich countries.
相关词语分为两大类:其一是,即名词、动词、数词和形容词等实词,根据这些词语就能够看出句子或文章的主要内容;其二是信息词,即情态动词(may, must, can, he to等),副词(yet, howr, therefore, otherwise, carefully, seriously 等)、连词(but, while, though, if 等)等虚词和短语(as if / though, on the contrary, by contrast, n if / though, in spite of 等),根据这些词语就能够推断出文章中人物的精神状态或作者的目的、意图、观点、立场、态度及文章的逻辑关系。
It’s time for class = It’s time to he class= It’s time that we he class.
Not all the students like sports = Not ry student likes sports.
如2000 年高考试题阅读理解的第三篇:“Decision - think - ing is not unlike poker ──it often matters not only what you think ,but also what others you think and what you think they think you think.”

Which of the following statements is implied but NOT stated?
What’s the best title for the text?
The best title for this passage is ___.
Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
What is the general/main idea of the passage? Which of the following expresses the main idea? What is the subject discussed in the text?
BThe writer of the story wants to l us that_____. The passage/ text is mainly about_____. What’s the article mainly about ?
如so,therefore,thus,consequently;in conclusion,in short;in a word, to sum up等来确定主题句的位置在段尾。
(1)表述过于片面,只涵盖该段个别细节;
What can we learn from the passage?
All the following are mentioned except
Which of the following is mentioned (not mentioned)?
Which of the following statements is true/right/false/wrong about…?
Which of the following is the correct order of…? Which of the following shows the path of signals described in Paragraph…?
题干:infer(推断),
indicate(象征,暗示), imply/suggest(暗示), conclude(作出结论), assume(定,设想).
It can be inferred/ concluded from the text that __________.
The author implies/ suggests that_____.
We may infer that _________.
What do you think will happen if/when…?
The passage is probably take out of_____
The passage would most likely be found in_____
Where does this text probably come from?
询问写作目的的题,选项里常出现的词 是:explain(解释), prove (证明), persuade(劝说), aise(劝告), comment(评论), praise(赞扬), criticize(批评), entertain(娱乐), demonstrate(举例说明), argue(辩论), l(讲述), yze(分析)等。
询问语气态度的题,选项里 常出现的词 是:neutral(中立的), sympathetic(同情的), satisfied(满意的), friendly(友好的), enthusiastic(热情的), subjective(主观的), objective(客观的), matter-of-fact(实事求是的), pessimistic(悲观的), optimistic(乐观的), critical(批评的), doubtful(怀疑的), hostile(敌对的), indifferent(冷淡的), disappointed(失望的)。
The pure of the text is_____
What is the main pure of the author writing the text? By mentioning…, the author aims to show that_____
What is the author’s attitude towards…?
What is the author’s opinion on…?
The author’s tone in this passage is _____.
The underlined word/phrase in the second paragraph means _____.
The word “it/they” in the last sentence refers to______.
The word “…”(Line 6. para.2)probably means ______.
The word “…”(Line 6. para.2)could best be replaced by which of the following?
Which of the following is closest in meaning to the word “…” ?
有时文章借助关联词(如because,as,since,for,so,thus,as a result,of course,therefore等等)表示前因后果。
例如:You shouldn't he blamed him for that,for it wasn't his fault.
If someone seems to dislike you, the reason for that dislike might he little or nothing to do with you. The person who doesn't like you might be fearful, or shallow, or busy or shy.
Man has known soming about the planets Venus,Mars, and Jupiter with the of spaceships.
He is so homely, not at all as handsome as his brother.根据not at all...handsome我们不难推测出homely的意思,即不英俊、不漂亮的意思。
She is unlikely to he stolen the money.
But sometimes,no rain falls for a long,long time. Then there is a dry period,or drought. 而a dry period和drought是同义语。这种同义或释义关系常由is,or,that is,in other words,be called或破折号等来表示。
Bananas, oranges, pineapples, coconuts and some other kind of fruit grow in warm areas.
The penguin is a kind of sea bird living in the South Pole. It is fat and walks in a funny way. Although it cannot fly,it can swim in the icy water to catch the fish.
The door was so low that he hit his head on the lin.(lin “过梁”。)
Afraid of waking the baby up, she tiptoed out of the room.(tiptoed “踮着脚走,蹑手蹑脚”)
承接关系(如 so, therefore, thus, hence, accordingly, consequently, as a result 等)
平列关系(如first, second, third…; firstly, secondly, thirdly…; first, next, then…; in the first place, in the second place…; for one thing, for another thing…;to begin with, to conclude 等)。
转折关系(如 howr, nrtheless, noneless, still, though, yet, in spite of, at any rate, in any case, whor, whatr on the contrary, in contrast, by contrast, in comparison, by comparison, conversely, otherwise 等)。
层递关系(如 also, further, furthermore, likewise, similarly, moreover, in addition, what’s more, too, either, neither, not…but…, not only…but also 等)。
It was a winter morning, just a couple of weeks before Christmas 2005. While most people were warming up their cars, Trevor, my huand, had to get up early to ride his bike four kilometers away from home to work.
